Updating My Big-Picture Strategy

I want to mark a transition. Over the last several months I’ve been digging even further into my own core, excavating and mapping subterranean layers from very early childhood. At the same time I’ve been re-visioning the direction of the work, and my relationship to it. That’s what I want to cover here, to give context to some changes and new offerings.

History of This Website

First, I want to address changes to this website. When I started it at the beginning of 2019, my only intention was to start pumping out the content, to get in the habit and push the envelope forward. At the same time I was caught up in helping my partner Spring complete her book, The Resonance Code. So for the first four months of the year I devoted myself to taking content from the past, from my 2011 book The Feeling Path, from old websites, from my more recent attempts to capture the latest, and to post something reasonable almost every day. I’m pretty happy with how that went.

Then we took off to Europe for a time, and in returning I found myself digging into another layer of transformation within myself. This one took me deeper into and past my own limitations, and led to some changes in my vision for the future of the work and my role in it.

New Focus for This Website

First, I’ve decided to devote this site to providing information and support to my clients and potential clients. Most of the material here serves that purpose, so I’ve not made much change to the content. The biggest change is to the web domain name. Which leads me to talk about the next shift in direction.

As I’ve felt and thought more deeply into the nature of the work and what it wants of me, and opened to the influence of Spring and her work with The Resonance Code, I’ve found myself speaking differently about “the feeling mind.” I’m realizing that what I am referring to by that phrase is a fundamental property of all consciousness and specifically a previously-hidden dimension of human consciousness. In order to capture and convey that quality, I’ve begun to call this dimension “feelingmind.” All one word, no article “the.”

New URL for This Website

As I’ve come to think about it, in the realm of human consciousness, feelingmind is a parallel dimension to cognition, for example, and actually lives in a space between thought and the physiological circuitry of emotion. In the realm of consciousness as a whole, feelingmind represents a structured interface between part and whole, between self and all there is. It’s tough to talk about it, clearly, and I don’t want to pretend that the words I’ve used here are definitive. This work is very much in flux.

At any rate, the website URL itself became an obstacle, pinned on an outmoded terminology that I did not want to perpetuate. I couldn’t acquire the domain feelingmind.com without the “the,” and decided instead to move the whole site to my own name: joeshirley.com. I think that’s the best solution in the long run.

A Science of Feeling

To continue the line of my deeper thinking about the work, I’ve become very clear about a strong motivation to plant this work in academia and other places. I want to make the case that this work is important, and that it represents a significant advancement of our scientific understanding of not only feeling, but of consciousness itself. As such, the work is crucial to our understanding of human nature and therefore essential to any of the current critical efforts to move our civilization forward.

I’ve taken very rudimentary, early steps toward that effort, and will be publishing writing along these lines at a different website, (URL tbd), with the intention of publishing a book when the work is complete enough for that. I’ll be heading off on a writing retreat with Spring over the holidays to make progress along these lines and intend to have some writing to share in early 2020.

History of This Website

Finally, and this is the most exciting announcement of all in the short term, I am setting up an online community for study and practice of feelingwork, and for taking the development of feelingwork further into new efforts to move us all forward. The introduction to this community is hosted at enteleos.com. It will also open sometime in early 2020.

The Enteleos Community is intended to be more than a simple support community for people doing their own feelingwork. I really want to be reaching together into bigger understanding and global practice. I want the community to become a force for good in the world, and am devoting myself to shepherding that forward in a way that honors the spirit of what wants to show up. I don’t know exactly what it’s going to look like, and that is part of the excitement.

Most of all, though, I want to admit that I am creating this community in large part to serve myself. I have worked at developing this work in isolation for decades, and have felt throughout my life that there is no community in the world to which I truly belong. I want that to change, and I’m going to give my best effort toward creating a community that helps me have that experience of belonging before I’m gone. I hope it will also satisfy that core need for many other people as well.

Again, take a look if you think you might be interested. I’d love to have you!

Want to dive in more deeply to feelingwork and further explorations of feelingmind? In 2020 I’ll be I’ll be opening a learning and practice community with live, group calls where we can go much deeper into the material and practice the skills. If you think you might be interested, please check out the community website at enteleos.com. If you might prefer working with me one-on-one, consider booking a private pession. If you’re already clear about what you want, contact me. Looking forward to connecting!
